Ice Hockey
A winter preoccupation for more than 100 years, hockey is truly Canada’s national game. And the enthusiasm is not limited to televised games of the major leagues either: more than 58,000 young Canadians in some 25,000 teams participate in organized minor hockey tournaments. Derived from the French hoquet ‘shepherd’s crook’ for the shape of the stick hockey originated from variations of stick and ball games brought to Canada by English soldiers in the 1850s. in 1875 Montreal student J.G. Creighton formalized rules and replaced the ball for a flat disk to give better control on ice.
The fast and often rough play made the sport appealing to spectators. The game spread quickly as rivalry among college amateur teams intensified. Professional teams soon followed. Formed in 1917, the National Hockey League has added US teams over the years and now consists of 30 teams, with only six in Canada. A trophy donated by Governor General Lord Stanley in 1893 is still awarded to the league’s winning team in Stanley Cup championships held each June. The original silver cup is on display in Toronto’s Hockey Hall of Fame.
