Halifax
Nature has blessed this region with sandy shoreline, rugged coastline and colourful gardens. This fine place was the location of the first British town in Canada, founded in 1749. Since then, the region has progressed to be home for a various mix of people. Delightful fishing villages, farming communities and Atlantic Canada’s biggest city await you.
Halifax’s wealth and development depended on its fluctuating military significance as stronghold, naval base and garrison for troops. Founded in 1749, its original purpose was merely to respond to the military and economic danger of Louisbourg, a French stronghold on what is now Cape Breton Island.
Halifax still demonstrates its past roots. The original city nestles on the region of an impressive hill, pressed firmly between the two strategic sites that gave it birth - the citadel above and the harbour below. The present citadel dates from the 1850s and, in spite of rivalry from the glass and steel buildings below, is still a commanding existence. The extraordinary waterfront has been partly renovated and successfully reminds Halifax’s great age of sail.
