The Prairie Provinces
Fewer than 5 million people live in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, which together fill an area twice the size of France. This makes for a lot of wide and lonely landscapes that have produced people who combine a rugged individualism with a sense of community unrivalled anywhere in the country. The climate is harsh – frigid in winter and hot and dry in summer – but the region is Canada’s breadbasket, and the source of much of its oil and natural gas. The area’s major cities – Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, and Winnipeg – provide a good base for exploring the area’s history: dinosaurs, native sites, frontier forts, and a variety of ethnic communities. National and provincial parks preserve grasslands badlands, waterways, and forests.
