St. John's
St. John's is the provincial capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, its largest city and the oldest English city in North America. St. John's is the oldest English-founded settlement in North America. Tradition declares that the city earned its name when explorer John Cabot became the first European to sail into the harbour, on June 24, 1497 — the feast day of Saint John the Baptist. St. John's has a Maritime climate with cool-to-warm summers, and relatively mild winters. The annual precipitation is moderate/high, with an average of 1,640 millimetres (64.6 in) per year. The city is also one the country's most prone areas for tropical cyclone activity as it is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to its east, where tropical storms and sometimes hurricanes travel. The capital of Newfoundland is easily explored on foot. Most of the sights are within a short distance of each other moving east along Water Street. Approaching by sea offers the best view of the harbour, in particular the steep cliff lined passage on the east side where pastel-coloured old houses cling to the rocks. The people of St. John’s are known for their friendliness, a delightful counterpoint to the harsh, rugged beauty that surrounds this historic town.
