Snowshoe Hare

Snowshoe Hare

Widespread throughout Northwestern Ontario, primarily in densely forested areas, swamps and brushland.

The snowshoe hare is a rabbit that has a special adaptation. For most of the year it has a brown upper coat and a whitish chin, belly, and tail. In winter the hare sheds its coat and grows a new one. This coat is all white except for the tips of the ears so it can blend in with the snow.
