Philately
Philately is the study of stamps, before and after they are issued. This means studying the design and printing process, including the paper and gum used. Postage stamps have a rich history. That history, however, only goes back to 1840. Prior to that time, the recipient paid the postage on a letter. Postage stamps tend to be among the most taken-for-granted items. Getting physical, you can discover each part of a stamp, so when you hear other collectors talking about measuring perforations, checking watermarks, or if the stamp has gum you can fully understand. Analyzing the physical side of a postage requires at least a minimum set of tools.
