History of Canada

Recorded Canadian history, while short relative to much of the world, islfull of intrigue. Colourful, dramatic, tragic, and wonderful occurances and stories abound. Much of it has been well documented by historians and writers for those who wish to delve further.

The aboriginal cultures the Europeans met and dealt with through the years of the fur trade and beyond make up a contrasting chapters of the story. Battles between the French and British, and the British and the USA, are major themes.

When Columbus 'discovered' America in 1492, thinking he had hit the lands south of China, vaguely called the Indies, he sensibly called the people he found 'Indians'.

When the Europeans arrived, Native Indian people across the country had developed a multitude of languages, customs, religious beliefs, trading patterns, arts and crafts, highly specialized skills, laws, and governments.

The arctic peoples lived in the far north. The subarctic group was found across the country from Newfoundland to British Columbia.

The plains people roamed across the prairies from Lake Winnipeg to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The peoples of the plateau area lived throughout central-southern British Columbia, and the northwest group ranged from Vancouver to Alaska along the Pacific coast, including the ocean islands of British Columbia.
