Grasslands National Park - Saskatchewan
Grasslands is the first national park of Canada to preserve a portion of the mixed prairie grasslands. Guided hikes, interpretive trails, bird watching, and nature photography are popular activities in Grasslands. There are two major motifs underlying the prairie landscape: subtlety and space. The space is overwhelming! Wallace Stegner, when writing of this landscape, described it as "a distance without limits, a horizon that did not bound the world but only suggested endless space beyond." While often looking desolate to the human eye, it is a land filled with life. Precious life in the region changes from one extreme to another. In this harsh prairie world the key to survival is adaptation. Discover animals that never drink the prickly pear cactus with 7 cm spines, red samphire - a plant that flourishes on salt flats and birds like the Sprague's pipit, which court in the sky.
