Fireweed

Fireweed

Fireweed is the floral emblem of Yukon. Summer might be short, but flowers still flourish. A plant of disturbed areas, roadsides, clearings, and shaded woods.

This plant is often one of the first plants to appear after a fire. The pink, four-pedaled flowers blooming long terminal clusters. Bracts between petals are narrow. The flowers bloom from the bottom of the cluster first, then upward on the stem. The leaves are alternate and appear whorled. The common name originates from the plants tendency to spring up from seeds and rhizomes on burned-over lands. The leaves resemble willow leaves, hence the alternate name ‘willow herb’. The young leaves can be used in salads, and a week they can be brewed from the plant. The inner pith can be used to thicken soups and stews.
