Chuckwagon Racing - Calgary

Chuckwagon racing is a pastime unique to the Canadian West. Chuckwagons were used for storing food and essential supplies for cowboys working on the range. Nobody is completely sure how the racing event got started. A popular theory is that at the end of the week, cowboys would race their chuckwagons from out on the range into town, and the last one in bought the beer.

The first official chuckwagon race was held at the 1923 Calgary Stampede, and was a great success with the crowds. Today’s races are highlight of the nightly evening rodeo and grandstand show at the Stampede. Four throughbreads pull each wagon. The driver is trailed by outriders, who load the wagon, then run to their horses and follow the wagon as fast as they can.

This is a fast-paced and dangerous sport. Each race lasts only a few minutes, including loading time, and represents a link to the living history of the Canadian West.
