Canadian Rockies Scenery
The Rocky Mountains are part of the Continental Divide that runs like a bony spine through North America. The range extends for 3,220 kms. from New Mexica into Canada. On the edge of the Canadian prairies, the journey from Calgary up the Bow River valley and into the vastness of the Canadian Rockies is one of dramatic and beautiful geological transition. Much of this drive is along expressways, so it is hardly a back road. The Rockies rise up fully grown from the prairies. One minute you're in ranch country, the next you're inside a narrow mountain valley surrounded by 920-metre peaks. The town of Banff is a wonderfully scenic mountain town that's also one of the most cosmopolitan small communities in North America. Banff is the most popular destination in Canada for foreign visitors. You'll find first-class hotels and dining, as well as the hiking, climbing, fishing, and rafting that you'd expect in the Rockies. Lake Lousie and its smaller cousin, Morraine Lake, are both incredibly beautiful spots: eerily green lakes nestled in a glacial basin directly below the peaks of the Continental Divide. The facilities are great. The Chateau Lake Lousie, sitting at the lake's edge, is one of the most famous hotels in Canada.
