Caliper Lake Provincial Park - Ontario
Tiny Caliper Lake is located just southeast of Lake of the Woods and is part of the same northern deciduous-evergreen forest zone as its better-known neighbour. The park's character comes from a verdant forest of huge red and white pine that thrive in the rich, glacier-deposited soil. Other northern trees found here include aspen, cedar, spruce and balsam fir. The forest provides habitat for many small mammals, and deer ae commonly seen along park trails. Caliper Lake is best known for ist birdwaching opportunities. Grouse can often be spotted scurrying into the bush, eagles and osprey soar over the lake, and loons are commonly sighted on the lake, especially during the early morning or at night. Most interesting perhaps are the white pelicans. Another exciting find for birdwatchers is the barred owl, which nests in the park. Canoeists tend to travel the shoreline in hopes of seeing wildlife. Longer-distance canoe trips may be taken along Caliper Lake and the Log River.
