The original idea for Le Chateau Montebello was put forth by H. M. Saddlemire, a Swiss-American. Saddlemire had already built a similar, but smaller, building in Maine, called the Lucerne-in-Maine, as a private club. Montebello was originally to be called the “Lucerne-in-Quebec” and the club was to be called the Lucerne-in-Quebec Community Association Limited.
However, when the Montebello project was undertaken by the Canadian Pacific Railway, it ended up as the private “Seignory Club.” Excavation on the foundation started on March 15,1930. The first log was placed on April 7,1930, and the log work was done by June 7, 1930, with other construction work completed by the official opening on July i, 1930. In 1900, construction began on a bridge that would set a world record, but also record two disasters along the way. The Quebec Bridge was almost finished on August 29,1907, when its southern span collapsed, killing seventy-five men, many of them from the Caughnawaga native band. It was Canada’s worst bridge disaster, attributed by the results of an inquiry to faulty design and inadequate supervision.

If you have already explored the superb canoeing in Whiteshell and Nopiming provincial parks or want some real wilderness, then you are spoilt for choice in Manitoba. Much of the best water is in the eastern half of the province in the remote Atikaki Provincial Wilderness Park, which has impressive stands of thick forest, several ancient pictograph sites and moose, timber wolves, coyotes and black bears. Its dramatic Bloodvein River to Lake Winnipeg is particularly outstanding with rapids, falls and wild twisting balanced by peaceful drifts through quiet lakes and wild-rice marshes. There are about 100,000 Mennonites in Canada today, almost all descendants of those who joined a Protestant sect in the Netherlands in the early 16th century under the leadership of Menno Symons.
